Exhibition preview- "For There is Always Light": The Wyatt Houston Day Collection of Poetry by African Americans In-Person
This Spring the LSU Libraries Special Collections presents the exhibition, “For There is Always Light: The Wyatt Houston Day Collection of Poetry by African Americans.” A preview featuring 6 iconic poets — Phyllis Wheatley, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Amiri Baraka, and Maya Angelou, along with a narrative of discovery centered on poet Harry Wilson Patterson — opens on the first floor of Hill Memorial Library on Monday, February 19th in time for Black History Month. The exhibition opens in full on both gallery floors on Monday, April 15th, during National Poetry Month, and runs through August 30th.
Visitors to the preview will find familiar names that are also represented within the Pinkie Gordon Lane Papers on display in the continuing 2nd floor exhibition, “The Legacies They Built: Honoring Pinkie Gordon Lane, Lutrill and Pearl Payne, and Julian T. White.” Second floor additions in April will provide a contextual overview of the Wyatt Houston Day Collection. Acquired in 2022, the collection features over 800 titles written by poets since our nation’s founding. Works of poetry range widely in topic, sentiment, and form. The poems continue to resonate with a modern audience, as evidenced by recent use of the work by undergraduate students in both classroom activities and public programming events.
