Pressin’ and Curlin’ Through The Movement In-Person
Celebrating Black History Month and Women's History Month while also building on the success of last year’s Black Women’s Biopics and the Black Living Room Pedagogy, this year’s project bridges the nostalgia of Black barbershops and beauty salons with contemporary student creativity (by way of their hair and nail designs display) by recreating a quintessential and contemporary beauty shop. Black salons and barbershops are more than spaces for grooming—they have served as vibrant cultural hubs, sites of political mobilization, and arenas for intergenerational dialogue. This exhibit will honor these spaces by immersing attendees in a sensory and intellectual journey, illustrating their historical significance and creative genius of previous generations of beauty and cultural producers
